NOTE: Advanced mode uses a predictive algorithm to charge/discharge the battery. Please allow the system one full week to learn your energy usage and production patterns to maximize performance. Anytime the settings in Advanced Mode are changed (i.e. the reserve for outages, price schedule, or balanced/cost-savings), this log of data is reset and must be rebuilt. Frequently changing advanced mode settings will result in unpredictable system performance.
The advanced (time-based control) mode can be used to save money on your utility bill when you are on a Time-of-Use (TOU) rate plan. Before you setup your app/Powerwall, you need to determine which TOU rate you are on. If you do not know your rate schedule, call your utility company, or look at your full bill. You can usually find your rate schedule on the second or third page of your utility bill (see below).
Once you’ve found your rate schedule, search online for the details of that rate schedule. This example is San Diego Gas & Electric and the rate is TOU-DR1. There are links at the bottom of this page for the most common TOU rates for San Diego Gas and Electric (SDG&E), Southern California Edison (SCE), Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E), and Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP).
After you’ve found your TOU rate details, you need to setup your app to match how you are billed.
Tesla’s mobile app overview page has step-by-step instructions to do this in the tesla app. When editing the price schedule, the blue color (off-peak) corresponds to the cheapest time period, the yellow color (peak) corresponds to the most expensive time period, and the grey color (shoulder) corresponds to any other time period. Different utilities have different names for these time periods (Peak, off-peak, super off-peak, mid-peak, etc.). The most important information to identify is:
- What is the most expensive time of the day?
- What is the least expensive time of the day?

Again using SDG&E’s TOU-DR1 as the example, this is how the app and TOU details are related to each other. NOTE: This rate has different schedules for weekdays and weekends, as you can see in the images below. If you have different rates on weekdays and weekends, you can set them using the “Week” and “Weekend” buttons at the top of the price schedule screen.
